Milo is a rescue that came to us right after he had been hit by a car. A Good Samaritan, Rhonda Mills, found him as he was struggling to move out of the way of traffic, immediately after being hit by a car. No one else stopped to help him. She scooped him up and brought him to the closest Veterinary Hospital. Dr. McGuire examined Milo and found he had been hit in the head. His left eye was severely damaged, as well as his left front leg. Dr. McGuire determined Milo's eye needed to be removed immediately.
The wonderful lady who brought him in tried in vain to find the owner, unsuccessfully. She did connect with Veteran rescuer, Nancy Underwood, who was willing to help. Nancy raised funds for Milo’s eye surgery and other surgeries needed to save his life. Thank you Nancy!
At the time of Milo's arrival, Dr. McGuire was unable to determine the total damage to the left side of Milo’s little body. He performed surgery the evening of his arrival to remove Milo's eye as that was needed immediately. Milo's front right leg was dragging and had no feeling from the shoulder down. In an attempt to save his leg, we decided to wait on amputation and give him time heal. After a month Milo had not regained much, if any, feeling in his leg. It was necessary to amputate his leg, as he was dragging it and could not walk.
After his surgery, Dr. McGuire and Nicole took him home to allow him to heal. They wanted to evaluate his personality outside a clinic environment and determine what kind of family he should be placed with. They found that he likes their children, ages 8 and 9. He loves Nicole, is frightened of men but is coming around. It is obvious that he has been a victim of abuse by a man. When guests are in the house, he reacts the same way. He warms to the female but fears the male. He now sits with Dr. McGuire, watching TV and enjoying snacks when offered. It has just taken time for him to realize he has left the painful world in which he apparently once lived. He doesn’t mind their cats or Chihuahua and spends most of his day just lounging around. He doesn’t use his back left leg much when he walks or runs. It was damaged from the accident as well. Dr. McGuire has started him on pain medication, hoping it will improve the use of his back left leg and his activity level. He is also on supplements for joint care, which will be necessary for life. The supplements are not expensive but are recommended. Because Milo only has three legs, pressure is put upon his body due to the shift in body weight.
We are unquestionably looking for the right home for Milo. Dr. McGuire's house is at c apacity with a four-pound Chihuahua that desires all their attention along with their cats. Aside from that, Milo deserves to be in a one or two pet home. He loves attention and being loved on! If you think you may be the right owner and are interested in adopting him, please let us know either via email or come by the Clinic. He is still living with Dr. McGuire's family, but arrangements can be made for you to meet Milo and complete an adoption application.
Milo has been through so much that we want to make sure he has the opportunity to be in the right home. He is loving and gentle and just needs someone who wants to be the same with him.
As a follow up, Milo has been adopted and is living a happy and healthy full life!
Sincerely,
Nicole McGuire
